~ A Smooth Sea never made a skilled sailor ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
This quote is fitting, yet simple but very profound in our daily lives. It is easy to become discouraged and beat yourself up over the blunders we have made in life. It is easy to allow small things to drag you down. Each of us grow through the experiences of trials and misfortunes, whether you are a politician, an entrepreneur, a leader or a student. We go through good times and we go through bad times, yet it balances as we grow. We grow in times of trouble, we grow through experiences, we grow through relationships and most importantly we grow in maturity. All in all, we should embrace the days when the seas are smooth and prepare to row through the high tides, rough seas and the different currents to become well-rounded sailors.
Great leaders, such as Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela and many others known or unknown to you, are known to overcome obstacles, and triumph in the face of significant challenges or circumstances in which others would not or could not. However, one thing that changes perspective to challenges and adversity is, Awareness.
In particular self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. It is the first step towards interpersonal competence – opening the way to self-management, awareness of others and differences. With leadership, self-awareness is not just about how we feel, its more about how we respond to how we feel. Our behavior determines our real leadership style. So do you want to become a skilled sailor in your life? Do you want to reach your chosen destination? Do you want to become part of a dynamic team of skilled sailors?
