Did you know that there are 1.5 billion websites on the internet to date?

That’s a lot of information at the click of a mouse.

The World Wide Web is a system that allows for interconnectivity between companies and people all over the world, and today, even a five-year-old knows how to do a Google search.

With so many people wanting to share their ideas and their company information it has become vital to stand out from the crowd. The best way to do this is to have a website that can kick some ninja butt and that ranks high on the search engines.

To have such a website, you will need a website developer and website designer to create a stunning looking website with a high SEO ranking.

Prestige Academy knocked on the door of two of our web alumni students to hear what they are up to and how our Web Programmes have helped them to be exactly that type of web developer and designer that gets your beautiful website up and running.

Marcus van Tiddens

Marcus van Tiddens, Prestige Academy Web Development Alumni

Marcus van Tiddens graduated in 2017 with a Diploma in Graphic Web Design and Web Development. This is a highly sought after qualification which is designed to equip you with the range of basic to advanced levels on web page design using JavaScript, and programming and developing an interactive website, to name but a few. Tiddens currently works as the lead web developer at Pixel Perfect in Somerset West (Western Cape).

What were your favorite modules?

ASP.Net and ADO.Net by far! This along with Microsoft SQL Server really did challenge and test you both on a mental and intellectual level. I’ve also noticed that Model-View-Controller (a methodology of ASP.Net) is industry-standard nowadays, with a lot of big companies using this exact combination.

How do you put into practice in the workplace what you have learned in class?

One of the things that I do on a daily basis which I learned in class, is the way that I approach a project or a problem, and come up with a solution and provide feedback. Communication is key and also breaking it up into pieces, handling each one at a time, working towards a bigger picture.

What was your Prestige Academy experience?

Before I signed up at Prestige Academy, I was told this campus was more like a family than anything else. After my time there, I cannot emphasize enough how true that was. I loved walking down the halls, saying “hello” to practically every face I passed by. The lecturers could give each student the individual attention they needed to ace finals. My class and I also got so close and really became a big part of each others’ lives. Prestige Academy is so caring, friendly and welcoming, I would go back any day if I had the opportunity!

Prestige Academy is also so diverse and multi-cultural, but what makes them really stand out, is how these different people from different areas, cultures, and upbringings all come together.

Would you describe your studies as being “fun”?

I enjoyed it too much! I always felt like when Mr. Käsner explained something to us, he was keeping something else a secret for us to discover. There is just so much to learn, and so many other things around it. Whether we discussed it in class or read about it at home, it always left me wondering about the possibilities and what else could be achieved.

What would you want to tell a prospective student who is interested in studying towards a Diploma in Graphic Web Design & Web Development or a Higher Certificate in Graphic Web Design?

You are in for the treat of your life! From design to coding, from sketch to prototype, from dream to reality. With the skills, you’ll learn you can do whatever you set your mind to. I always use the example of how I love to design and absolutely adore writing code, so being able to make my designs come to life with code is what keeps me sane!

What is some advice you would give to someone who is enrolling for this programme?

I honestly believe that if you do choose to pursue a career in web design or development, be ready for a challenge, be ready for having to go the extra mile, be ready to be challenged, and when challenged, be willing to say “challenge accepted”. Most importantly, however, have fun, explore the endless possibilities, focus on what you do best, and do it well. But above all else, stay curious.

What would you say were some of your favorite modules in this programme?

PHP and coding standards as well as the techniques of coding.

What was the one thing that stood out for you when you were learning in class?

Definitely, receiving personal attention when it comes to my studies. Learning was also fun as we did a lot of cool and new things in class every day.

What is something you took away from your studies?

I received a deeper understanding of how the web works and saw the web connected to a business in a different light.

What is some advice you would like to give someone who is interested in studying towards this programme?

To always need and keep up with the latest trends because of the world of web shifts and changes in an instant. Code as much as possible, even if it’s just something simple. Take what you learn in class and build on that. And most importantly have fun with it!
